Understand a household balance

In short

The balance combines accrued bill responsibility, attributed bill payments and recorded settlements. Inspect the breakdown before sending or recording money.

Recurring responsibility

A saved share can accrue for eligible periods from the bill/share’s starting month. Its cadence matters: a yearly or quarterly bill contributes in its applicable periods. New periods can add responsibility even after an earlier settlement cleared the balance.

Payment credits and overrides

Paid by identifies who fronted a bill payment. A credited payment can reduce what that person owes. A period responsibility assignment can replace that period’s normal shares; Don’t split this one excludes the payer’s particular payment from their balance without waiving everyone else’s shares.

Settlements

A settlement records money transferred between a member and the owner. It offsets the current balance; it does not remove future bill responsibilities. Read the named payer/recipient rather than relying only on a positive or negative sign.

Check a discrepancy

Inspect the bill share, effective periods, payer, assignments, currency and settlement history. A removed member’s earlier balance may remain. Changes to the current split are not guaranteed to preserve a frozen split for every historic payment.
