Record a changed bill total or partial payment
Keep the amount you paid separate from the full bill total, and choose whether a new price applies beyond this month.
In Log payment, review the month’s bill above Amount you paid. Select Change to edit the prefilled total. Only this month is selected by default; choose future bills explicitly when the usual amount has changed.
Record a changed bill total and find its payment is coming soon. The written steps below are complete.

Open the bill and choose Log payment. Check Counts toward for the month the payment covers, and Paid date for the day you actually paid. HomeWeal records the payment; it does not send money. Review the month’s bill above Amount you paid. Select Change to edit the prefilled statement total, or Enter the statement total when it is unknown. Left after this payment accounts for earlier payments too. Only this month is selected by default. For eligible fixed bills, choose the month and future bills explicitly to change the usual amount. Later months with recorded totals keep them; earlier months without a recorded amount may also use the new usual amount. Choose the payment method, then add a confirmation or reference if you have one. This sample reference is fictional. Review the month, date, amount, and statement total and month-only or future choice before saving. After saving, open the bill's History to check the recorded payment and its details. A payment can leave a remaining amount if you paid only part of the bill. Open History to search for the bill and narrow the payment records with the available filters. Check the matching record before editing it or exporting the filtered view.
Before you start
Have the actual bill total and payment ready. A viewer cannot record a payment. Changing the bill total does not transfer money or mean the full bill was paid. Change is offered for an active, unarchived bill in the current or a future billing month, with permitted household write access. Members limited to shared bills may not have this control.
Record the payment and total
- Open the bill and select Log payment. Check Counts toward and Paid date.
- Enter Amount you paid in the bill’s currency. For example, enter 30 if you paid 30 toward a total of 133.
- The month’s bill shows its recorded total, or the bill’s usual amount. Select Change to edit that prefilled statement total: 133 in this example. Select Done when ready. If the total is unknown, select Enter the statement total; an entered zero is a known total.
- Keep Only [month], selected by default, for a one-off change. Choose [month] and future bills only when the usual amount has changed. This choice is offered for fixed bills with an existing usual amount and a different, positive total. Variable bills, fixed bills without a usual amount and zero totals use the month-only change.
- Review Left after this payment, method, payer and optional Confirmation / reference, then save. Inspect the payment under the intended month in History.
Remaining balance and genuine overpayment
The remaining balance uses the explicit bill total minus payments already recorded for that month, including the new payment. A 30 payment on a 133 bill does not change the bill to 30. An amount beyond what is actually left still needs the Record overpayment acknowledgment; first check the bill, period and amount.
Which months change
Only [month] records that billing period’s total; later months keep their usual or recorded totals. [Month] and future bills also changes the fixed bill’s usual amount. Later months without a recorded total use the new usual amount; later months with a recorded total keep it. Earlier months without a recorded amount may also use the new usual amount. To change a future estimate without recording a payment already made, edit the bill instead.
